How to Floss with a Dental Bridge

Using Floss Threaders for a Thorough Clean

Cleaning under a dental bridge is crucial for preventing plaque buildup and gum disease. Since you can't floss down from the top, you need a special tool called a floss threader to access this area.

Cleaning Under Your Bridge: Step-by-Step

  1. Take about 18 inches of your regular floss and thread about 5 inches of it through the loop of the floss threader.
  2. Insert the pointed end of the floss threader under your bridge, from the cheek side towards the tongue side.
  3. Pull the threader all the way through so the floss is now under the bridge.
  4. Remove the threader from the floss. Now, holding the floss on both ends, gently clean the underside of the artificial tooth (pontic) and the sides of the supporting teeth.
  5. Gently pull the floss out from the side.
