Getting traditional metal braces is an exciting step toward a perfect smile, but it also means upgrading your oral hygiene routine. Brackets and wires create countless tiny ledges where plaque and food particles can easily hide.
Why Specialized Brushing Matters
If plaque is allowed to accumulate around your brackets, the bacteria will produce acids that decalcify the tooth enamel. This causes white spot lesions—permanent white squares on your teeth that become visible once the braces come off. In worse cases, it leads to cavities and swollen gums (gingivitis), which can slow down your orthodontic progress.
Essential Tools for Braces
- Soft-Bristled Toothbrush: An orthodontic cut (V-shaped) manual brush or an electric toothbrush with an ortho head.
- Interdental Brushes: These tiny "tree-shaped" brushes are crucial for cleaning behind the wires.
- Floss Threaders or Water Flosser: To get between teeth where a normal toothbrush cannot reach.
- Fluoride Mouthwash: For an extra layer of enamel protection.
Step-by-Step Brushing Technique
- Rinse First: Swish water vigorously to dislodge larger food particles.
- Angle the Brush: Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums. Brush the top of the brackets pointing downward, and the bottom pointing upward.
- Circular Motions: Use small, gentle circular motions rather than harsh scrubbing. Spend at least 10 seconds per tooth.
- Don't Forget the Basics: Brush the chewing surfaces and the backs of your teeth as normal.
Flossing Around Wires
Normal flossing is impossible with a continuous wire. Use a floss threader (similar to threading a needle) to slip the floss behind the main orthodontic wire before sliding it between your teeth. If string floss is too difficult, consider investing in a high-quality Water Flosser, which uses a pressurized stream of water to blast away plaque.
