Tooth extractions are among the most common dental procedures — but proper aftercare is essential to prevent complications and ensure a smooth, pain-free recovery. Follow this timeline carefully.
The First Hour After Extraction
Your dentist will place gauze over the extraction site before you leave. Keep biting down firmly on it for at least 30–45 minutes to allow a blood clot to form. This clot is the foundation of healing — do not disturb it.
- Do not rinse, spit, or use a straw for the first 24 hours.
- Do not smoke — the suction can dislodge the clot and nicotine impairs healing.
- Take pain medication before the anesthesia wears off.
- Apply an ice pack to your cheek (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to minimize swelling.
Days 1–3: The Critical Phase
During this window, the blood clot must remain intact. Resume gentle saline rinses from day 2 onwards (half teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water). Tilt your head gently — do not gargle or swish forcefully. Continue taking prescribed medications as directed. Swelling typically peaks at 48–72 hours then gradually subsides.
Dry Socket: Signs & Prevention
Dry socket (alveolar osteitis) occurs when the blood clot dislodges or dissolves prematurely, exposing the bone. It affects around 2–5% of extractions but up to 30% of wisdom tooth removals.
Signs: Severe, throbbing pain starting 3–4 days after extraction, bad odor, visible bone in the socket. If you experience these, return to your dentist immediately for a medicated dressing.
Prevention: Avoid smoking, straws, spitting, and vigorous rinsing for the first 72 hours. These are the primary causes of dry socket.
What to Eat After Extraction
Choose soft, cool, or room-temperature foods for the first week:
- Safe choices: Yogurt, ice cream (without nuts), mashed potatoes, soft cooked pasta, scrambled eggs, smooth soups, banana, avocado, soft fish.
- Avoid: Crunchy foods (chips, nuts, seeds), hard bread, sticky candies, very hot foods and drinks, carbonated beverages, and alcohol.
- Chew on the opposite side from the extraction site.
