Bleeding from a Tooth

A Rare but Significant Symptom

While bleeding gums are very common, bleeding that appears to be coming from the tooth itself is a rare and specific sign. It usually indicates that the pulp (nerve) tissue inside the tooth is exposed and inflamed.

Causes of Bleeding from a Tooth

  • Pulp Polyp: This is the most common cause of true bleeding from a tooth. It occurs in teeth with large, open cavities, typically in children and young adults, where the inflamed pulp tissue grows out of the cavity.
  • Trauma: A severe fracture that exposes the pulp can cause bleeding directly from the center of the tooth.
  • Internal Resorption: A rare condition where the inside of the tooth is eaten away, which can sometimes perforate the side of the tooth and cause bleeding.
