Step-by-Step Guide to the C-Shape Method

  1. Measure: Start with about 18 inches (45 cm) of floss. Wrap most of it around one middle finger, and a small amount around the other.
  2. Grip: Hold a tight 1-2 inch section of floss between your thumbs and index fingers.
  3. Insert: Gently guide the floss between two teeth using a gentle sawing motion. Never snap the floss into your gums.
  4. Form the 'C': Once at the gumline, curve the floss into a 'C' shape against one tooth.
  5. Slide: Gently slide the floss into the space between the gum and the tooth until you feel resistance.
  6. Wipe: Scrape the side of the tooth, moving the floss away from the gum. Repeat this up-and-down motion 2-3 times.
  7. Repeat: Curve the floss around the adjacent tooth and repeat the process. Use a clean section of floss for each tooth.
