Dental Implant Post-Operative Care Guidelines

Immediate Post-Surgery Care (First 24-48 Hours)

• Bleeding: Apply firm, continuous pressure with gauze pads for 30-60 minutes. A small amount of oozing is normal.
• Swelling: Apply ice packs to the outside of your face for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, for the first 24-48 hours.
• Pain Management: Take prescribed pain medication as directed. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can also help.
• Diet: Stick to soft, cool foods and liquids. Avoid hot beverages, alcohol, and using straws.
• Rest: Get plenty of rest and avoid strenuous activities. Keep your head elevated when lying down.

Oral Hygiene During Healing

• Rinsing: Gently rinse with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon salt in 8 oz warm water) 2-3 times a day, especially after meals. Avoid vigorous rinsing.
• Brushing: Be very gentle around the surgical site. You can brush other areas normally. Your dentist may recommend a special soft brush or a chlorhexidine mouthwash.
• Smoking: Avoid smoking completely, as it significantly impairs healing and increases the risk of implant failure.

What to Expect During Recovery

Mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising are common. These symptoms should gradually subside over a few days to a week. If you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, or signs of infection (fever, pus), contact your dentist immediately.

Long-Term Care for Your Implants

Once healed, treat your dental implants like natural teeth. Maintain excellent oral hygiene with regular brushing and flossing, and attend routine dental check-ups and professional cleanings. This will ensure the longevity of your implants.
